What size goalkeeper gloves should I choose? The measurement guide (adult)

This is the question we get asked most often, and it's also where we see the most mistakes. One in two goalkeepers plays with gloves that are too big – because they got last year's size, because a friend told them to go big, or simply because no one ever explained how to measure.

A glove that's too big isn't just a comfort detail. It means latex bunching up on impact, a ball slipping, an unprotected thumb, and a pair that wears out twice as fast. Here's the method, in thirty seconds.

The measurement: only one thing to do

Place your hand flat on a table, fingers together, palm down. Measure the distance between the base of your palm – the wrist line – and the tip of your middle finger. In centimeters, without forcing, with a relaxed hand.

That's all. No need to measure around your hand or its width. For a goalkeeper glove, length is key.

A tip: measure both hands. It's common to have a difference of 2 or 3 millimeters. In that case, use the larger measurement.

This chart applies to the DENY ZERO. Correspondences vary by a few millimeters from one brand to another, so always refer to the manufacturer's chart rather than relying on "I'm a size 9 everywhere."

The "one size up" trap

The most common belief among amateur goalkeepers: going up a size "for comfort." This is the exact opposite of what you should do.

A glove that's too big creates a gap between the palm and the latex. On impact, the latex bunches up instead of staying flush. The result: less contact surface with the ball, less grip, and creases that become points of premature wear. On a powerful shot, the glove moves on the hand instead of absorbing – and that's when you can hurt your fingers.

The right indicator: when you close your hand, the latex should follow the movement without forming a bulge at the fingertips. You should feel the tips of your fingers reach the end of the glove, without being compressed.

What if I'm between two sizes?

It depends on the cut.

For a negative cut, like that of the DENY ZERO, the seams are inside the glove: it naturally fits tighter, like a second skin. If you measure 19.8 cm, take size 8, not 9. The negative cut stretches slightly after a few sessions.

For a flat or roll finger cut, the glove fits wider. If you're between two sizes, you can take the larger one with little risk.

If you're still hesitating between two sizes for a negative cut, the question to ask yourself is: do I play more for feel or for security? A goalkeeper who distributes a lot with their feet and plays high prefers a tight fit. A goalkeeper who faces many powerful shots prefers half a point of margin.

The wrist matters as much as the hand

This is the parameter often overlooked. Two goalkeepers with the same hand length can have very different wrists, and a loose cuff cancels out a good palm size.

Should I change sizes during the season?

For an adult, no. Your hand is no longer growing. If your glove seems wider after two months, it's not your hand that has shrunk: it's the latex and cuff that have loosened, which is normal.

However, do not compensate by going down a size when repurchasing. Stick to your measurement.
