    DENY GLOVES

A goalkeeper glove that no longer grips is almost always one of four problems: dirty latex, overly dry latex, a detergent film clogging the pores, or simply worn-out latex. The good news: in three out of four cases, it can be salvaged. Here's how to diagnose and restore grip to your gloves.

Cause #1: The latex is dirty

Dust, dirt, and grass fibers get embedded in the latex, forming a layer that prevents contact with the ball. This is the most common cause, especially on dry or synthetic pitches.

The solution: Rinse the palms with lukewarm water and gently rub with your fingers to remove residues. Clean latex means grippy latex. Absolutely avoid machine washing (we explain why here).

Cause #2: The latex is too dry

Latex provides its best grip when slightly damp. When dry, it slips. Many goalkeepers believe their pair is dead when it just needs a little water.

The solution: Lightly moisten the palm before and during play — a little water in a bottle or spray is enough. You'll immediately feel the grip return. This is a habit all pros have.

Cause #3: A film of detergent or product

If you've ever washed your gloves with laundry detergent, fabric softener, or a household cleaner, a chemical film has deposited on the latex and is clogging its pores. This is often invisible but kills the grip.

The solution: Rinse thoroughly with clear water, several times, to try and remove the film. In the future, only use lukewarm water and possibly a mild soap or specific glove wash — nothing else.

Cause #4: The latex is simply worn out

Latex is a consumable material: it wears out with every contact with the ground and the ball. If the palm is smooth, shiny in places, cracked, or full of micro-holes, no amount of cleaning will bring it back. Grip comes from the texture of the latex; once it's gone, it's gone.

The solution: It's time to replace your pair. To recognize the exact signs, read our guide on when to change your goalkeeper gloves.

    How to prevent grip loss

The best grip is one that is maintained. Three simple habits are enough: rinse after each session, moisten before playing, and lay flat to dry in the shade (never on a radiator). And if you play often, alternating two pairs allows the latex to rest between matches.

    A word on latex quality

Not all latexes are equal in terms of wear and moisture resistance. An entry-level latex loses its grip much faster than a good German latex. The DENY ZERO uses a 4mm German Contact Latex that maintains its grip, even in wet conditions — provided, of course, it's maintained as described above.
