Caretaker's return to work: the checklist for being ready in September
DENY GLOVES
In brief
Before returning to play, check 7 things: the condition of your gloves' latex (worn grip and palm?), a 2nd pair for rotation, your shin guards and uniform, your physical fitness, your footwork and dives, your mental preparation, and your maintenance kit. The classic September pitfall: a dead glove from last year, or only one pair for the entire season.
By Arnaud Brossard — goalkeeper for 15 years, founder of DENY GLOVES.
The season is about to restart. And if you're honest with yourself, you haven't really thought about it yet.
However, the difference between a goalkeeper who starts the season well and one who struggles is determined now. Not in the first match. Before.
Here are the 7 points to check before the season restarts. It takes one evening, no more.
1. Are your gloves still alive?
The most honest test: take a key, gently run it over the palm of your glove. If you hear "screech" and the key slides, your latex is glazed. It won't grip anything properly from the first match.
Another test: strongly squeeze the palm between your fingers. If you feel hard, grainy, or cracked areas, the latex has reached the end of its life.
A glove at the end of its life does not improve with summer rest — on the contrary, heat accelerates degradation. Decide now whether or not you're starting the season with this pair.
2. Your hand may have changed
If your last pair is more than a year old, measure your hand. It happens more often than we think that a goalkeeper changes size — especially between 15 and 25, but also after weight gain or muscle mass loss.
Take 30 seconds to lay your hand flat, measure from the base of the palm to the tip of the middle finger, and compare the length to our size guide. The complete method and chart are detailed in how to choose the right size goalkeeper gloves.
An important reminder: choose the size that corresponds to your measurement, never the one above. For a negative cut, even round down.
3. The right type of latex for the coming season
You don't play in the same conditions in Marseille as in Rennes. Ask yourself 2 questions:
- Will your field be rather dry or rather wet? German Contact latex becomes perfect in wet conditions, but you need to know that before buying.
- How many times a week will you play? For under 2 sessions per week, 3mm latex is perfectly sufficient. Above that, you'll benefit from 4mm for durability.
And if your club plays on artificial turf, read why gloves wear out so quickly on artificial turf: it changes the way you approach the season. To go further: 4mm vs 3mm latex.
4. Is your fastening system still working?
If you play with a strap, take 10 seconds to test the Velcro. If it no longer sticks firmly, doesn't close completely, or leaves a visible gap, it's over. A worn strap no longer supports the wrist and makes stopping powerful shots dangerous (possible sprain).
If you play strapless, check that the negative cut still fits your hand. If the glove is loose, the fabric has stretched — which is irreversible.

5. Relearn your maintenance routine
Two months of rest takes its toll on memory. Here are the 4 actions that double the lifespan of your gloves — to re-integrate from the start of the season:
- Lightly moisten the latex before each session
- Rinse with lukewarm water after each match (never hot)
- Squeeze without twisting, dry flat in the open air
- Never dry in direct sunlight or near a radiator
A well-maintained glove lasts 40 to 60 hours of intense play. Poorly maintained, you drop to 20-25 hours. The complete routine is here.
6. Your spare pair (yes, you need one)
A serious goalkeeper does not play with only one pair for the entire season. Here's why:
- One pair drying while the other plays = rested latex, optimal grip
- A tear mid-match = you continue with your spare pair
- Latex that has had 24 to 48 hours to dry is more abrasion-resistant than still-damp latex
That's why we offer a progressive discount from the second pair on the DENY ZERO — and on the ZERO ROOKIE for young goalkeepers. One pair for matches, one pair for training.
7. Your mentality: prepare for the season, not the first match
The big mistake many goalkeepers make: thinking about the first match back and frantically buying the week before.
Anticipate. A pair ordered now has time to arrive, be tested in training, adapted to your hand, and ready for the first official match — not ordered in an emergency 3 days before the restart.
It's also the best way to avoid the panic of the big store where you grab the first available pair because "you need something for Sunday."
The recap
- Your current gloves: still good or need changing?
- Your size: measured recently?
- Your latex type: adapted to your playing context?
- Your fastening system: functional?
- Your maintenance routine: reactivated?
- Your spare pair: ready?
- Your anticipation: order placed before the restart?
If you can check these 7 points, you'll start the season better prepared than 90% of amateur goalkeepers. And in a position where confidence changes everything, this preparation is priceless.
